ABOUT ME

My name is Drew Mitchell-Wilson. I currently live in the Vancouver BC and a 2nd year student at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. One of my biggest passions is photography and has been since I was nine years old. I feel it is essential that the people of our world are able to have the experiences that art can bring. I believe the artistic experience is at risk, and I intend to do my part to insure that it endures. To accomplish this, my goal as an artist is to reveal the nuance and emotion within unlikely, found or familiar objects, people or experiences.

From early childhood, I have been drawn to uncover and linger on the emotional properties of our world. A right-brain learner, I am hardwired to notice multidimensionality, feeling, sensation and beauty. From a lengthly physical illness in my junior year, I learned to reach out toward beauty from a place of on-going physical pain. This has deepened my work, adding complexity and potential.

While I work in several media, my great love is photography. This is because the viewer must stop and take in the image, be still in its stillness, and absorb and experience the emotion it carries. This is my aesthetic goal for each of my pieces. Currently I am interested in combining musical sound with photography to create a multi-sensory emotional climate. Though I love the texture of film, I am exploring the digital world, and I shoot in either natural light or have my lighting designer, Nick Kalish work with me and the models. I listen to music I seek my still life; as the artist, my vision is shaped by the music I hear.

I want to be the best artist I can be! So later I can make a living in what I love to do.

I'm just young and learning, and I will not even be done learning when it's over.

Thank you for reading about me and I hope you enjoy my website!
