REVIEWS Some selected reviews of my work in Edinburgh
“The Lamplighter's Lament provides one of those moments in life when you know you are witnessing something truly special... This performance was absolutely magical. Despite the strong visual aspect, the performance is also dominated by emotional subtleties. Do hold your breath for them.
They are worth it.” THREE WEEKS ééééé
“To deliver an affecting piece of theatre is an impressive achievement. To do it without words and with props not much more sophisticated than a sheet of plastic and the contents of a suitcase is just stunning.
There are all sorts of productions during the Fringe and part of its enduring appeal is that you never quite know what you will find. However, there can be few shows like The Lamplighter's Lament. I shed tears at the sheer beauty of it. Simply beautiful.”
“The Lamplighter is a sleepwalker who lives by the sea, an idea that is quaint in itself. But it leads to possibly the most evocative and beautiful onstage representation of the sea that is ever likely to exist. It's a moment that epitomises the whole show. A plastic sheet washes up to a man whose back faces us, lit only from above. As the sheet falls around his feet, tide-like, it rises from the opposite end and slopes down towards him again, as it recedes from his feet like the ebb of a wave. I'm in danger of saying 'beautiful' too much.”
“Rich Rusk is known for creating ingenious, visually arresting Fringe theatre. This deceptively simple, elegantly told tale is no exception.
It exerts a powerful emotional pull and at its heart lies the message that we must all move on from the grieving process eventually. This is what Fringe theatre is all about.”
