ARTIST STATEMENT
“...to paint a picture or to write a story or to compose a song is an incarnational activity. The artist is a servant who is willing to be a birth giver. In a very real sense the artist should be like Mary who, when the angel told her she was to bear the Messiah, was obedient to the command... I believe that each work of art, whether it is a work of great genius or something very small, comes to the artist and says, “Here I am. Enflesh me. Give birth to me.” And the artist either says, “My soul doth magnify the Lord”, and willingly becomes the bearer of the work, or refuses.”

Walking on Water
As a Christian, woman, visual artist and musician, the arts have been
my main forum for the working through of such questions as identity, faith, spirituality, worship, poverty, justice, community, healing and aesthetics.
In my work, which has many diverse influences and is presented through a variety of mediums- painting, printmaking, toilet seats, encaustic, wood, glass, mixed media- I am exploring such themes as:
Awareness of and response (YES!) to God’s extravagant, riotous creation and loving, creative Spirit in and among us all
Challenging notions of beauty- where it is found, where to look for it/place it
Beauty, aesthetic value in ordinary things- inherent and intentional
Awareness of one’s environment- how our space can/does affect us
Humour
The healing, incarnational power of creativity and the Arts
Art as a vehicle for change- personally and in the community
Art as interactive
Art as worship/ worship as art
We are all of us made in the image of the Creator God, the Artist.
